The Department for Welfare of Disabled was established in 1983 after the demerger from the Social Welfare Department. In the year 2002, Government established Senior Citizens Wing and attached the subject to Disabled Welfare Department and nominated the Commissioner, Disabled Welfare as State Level Nodal Officer for implementation of National Policy of Older persons in the State. Government with commitment to empower Transgender Persons in the State, newly established the Transgender Persons Wing and attached the subject to this Department in the year 2022. Orders were issued changing the nomenclature of the Department to Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens & Transgender Persons The Department is exclusively functioning for well-being of the most vulnerable sections in the Society viz., Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens & Transgender Persons by way of implementing various schemes/programs besides safeguarding their rights to enable them to lead a dignified life in the society .
